As soon as American basketball fans had come to terms with the loss of
the likes of Josh Childress, Carlos Delfino and Earl Boykins to Europe
this summer, we started hearing about the unthinkable. LeBron James suiting up for Olympiacos of Greece in 2010?
Kobe Bryant becoming player-owner of a team in Italy? Teammates on the
U.S. Olympic squad heading to Russia?
Interviews with some of the league's elite players certainly
suggested that this summer's trickle of talent to Europe could become a
full-blown torrent over the coming years, with annual salaries of $50
million a year tax-free being thrown around.
Just one small problem.
Nobody in Europe -- where execs, agents, fans and media are
still trying to get their heads around the $20 million, three-year deal
Childress inked with Olympiacos -- is close to offering that kind of
contract.
Yet.

bitter battle for her party's nomination for the presidency, on Tuesday
night called for her fellow Democrats to unite behind Sen. Barack Obama."My friends, it is time to take back the country we love," she told
delegates at the Democratic National Convention. "And whether you voted
for me, or you voted for Barack, the time is now to unite as a single
party with a single purpose. "We are on the same team, and none
of us can sit on the sidelines. This is a fight for the future. And
it's a fight we must win." She also touched on a common
message of the night -- that Sen. John McCain, the Republicans'
presumptive nominee, would offer more of the same types of policies of
the Bush administration. "You haven't worked so hard over the
last 18 months, or endured the last eight years, to suffer through more
failed leadership," Clinton said. "No way. No how. No McCain."Hillary Clinton: 'Obama is my candidate'

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released 10 years ago
this week and went on to sell more than 8 million copies, win five
Grammys and earn a four-star review in Rolling Stone. Mary
J. Blige hailed it as "one of the most incredible albums ever made"
and the record influenced a generation of soul and hip-hop artists.
"Music is about to change," Hill told Rolling Stone's
Touré for his 1999 cover story. "I think now people feel a
little more comfortable playing with the parameters. Writing more
intensely."
Miseducation's liner notes mostly credit Hill with
producing, writing and arranging the entire album. It was, in fact,
a huge group effort (as underlined by a lawsuit settled out of
court in 2001 for a reported $5 million).
To celebrate the album, Rolling Stone spoke with many
of those responsible for making it: a then-little known pianist
named John Legend, D'Angelo, engineer Commissioner Gordon, backup
singers, New-Ark producers, Hill's longtime companion Rohan Marley,
her Fugee bandmate Pras Michel.

You Say She’s Just a Friend: Why True Platonic Friendship Doesn’t Exist by Drew Stewart Saturday, 07 June 2008||Drew Stewart
We’ve all basked in the euphoria associated with a crush before. But how should one react to the uneasy joy that comes from learning that a person we’ve called a friend is attracted to us?---or even worse, how should one react when the secret admire is them? You know the signs: the warm and fuzzy sensation after a seemingly innocent embrace that lasts slightly longer than it should (don’t fake like you don’t know the difference between a church hug and a flirtatious one), or maybe a cute round of “You Hang Up First. No, You Hang Up First”, or maybe an unexpected flash of jealously at the thought of your friend falling in love with someone else. Recording contracts for new artists need to change. It is almost unnecessary by now to note that traditional album sales have dropped steadily since 2003. Music sales were down 14% in 2007. Recording artists’ moral has never been lower, much of it due to what they perceive as unfair practices committed by the record labels. Note: revisited article. We have a situation that some of us may know all too well… The storybook boy meets girl … Our two subjects become comfortable to the point that sharing secrets is no longer an issue, like it almost happens on accident. Life is good, or so it would seem. Time passes, our subjects get older and the girl has become so enamored with this boy. She finds herself thinking about “one day when” - looking at girlfriend’s children, engagement rings, and other accoutrements of a future that she covets to share with this boy whom she loves. Conversely, the boy begins to feel like the girl is becoming too comfortable or involved in his life that was up to this point, all his own. His own friends, family, home, dog, are not becoming “theirs”. Read more >> | Racial Profiling: The Tide Has Shifted, So Where’s The Love? By Nolan L. Cabrera Friday, 21 March 2008||Foresight In a post-9/11 world, Black and Latin@s have experienced a shift in how racial profiling is conducted at the airport. It used to be that if you were part of the melanin-enhanced, you could expect to have your bag receive additional inspections while you are being wanded by an “expertly trained” security personnel. Now, everybody has to go through the ridiculous steps of taking off their shoes, carrying no liquids (although they’ll charge you $5.00 for a bottle of water on the other side of the security gate), while making sure your pants don’t fall down as your belt goes through the x-ray machine. Ed's Note: Revisited articleYou’ve never felt this way about anyone before. You think about them nonstop and feel dizzy when they’re around. If you didn’t believe in soul mates, you do now. Your relationship is rivaled only by the magic of Walt Disney’s fairy tales. And so you’re thrilled when, three and a half years into your relationship, your sweetie invites you to a fancy restaurant for a romantic candlelit dinner for a serious discussion that “has implications for the rest of your lives together.” As you’re finishing your meal, your better half drops a bomb that instantly sucks every ounce of romance out of the air. At the thought of their temerity, you steam in silence, trying to figure out how they could even fix their self-interested lips to utter such a vulgar word. Yes, the “P-word.” Read more >> |
