Whatever happened to the days when an individual could enjoy a musician, without another person screaming in their ear, about what is or is not real hip-hop? It seems that people are quick to write off a particular artist or song simply because they believe they should do so. Factors such as a person’s geographical location, race and educational background compel some people to feel that they are tied to one particular aspect of music. This definitely should not be! No person should be confined to listening to a specific sub-genre of hip-hop or any genre of music for that matter. I don’t see the harm in a person listening to Jay-Z, zoning out to the likes of Jean Grae or dancing to Foxx’s “Wipe Me Down”. I, for one lack the ability to listen to the same type of music constantly. Truthfully, I need a bit of variety in my life. The frame of mind that I am in on a daily basis changes frequently. I need a certain type of song to accommodate those changes.

During my undergraduate tenure at the University of Connecticut, I encountered countless students who would dismiss many of the mainstream acts as a “waste of time”. They would then proceed to play me several songs by underground rap artists who they deemed to meet their stringent criteria of what an artist or real music should sound like. On more than one occasion, I can distinctly remember being at a party or event, when suddenly, I heard a fairly popular song blaring out of a speaker system. I would usually respond with a great deal of excitement upon hearing a song I thoroughly enjoyed. Someone would then say,” I would’ve never guessed that you listen to this type of crap”. I would shrug it off and continue to do whatever it was I was doing. Conversely, I have a more than a few peers and family who look at me with the “bitter beer face” whenever I mention a song or an artist that is relatively unknown to the general population.

They often reply, “Mitch, I can’t really get down with the type of rap you listen to. It’s a bit too underground for my tastes.” Or they will simply say that the artist is “weak” and continue to tell me which artists are hot in the streets.

I do not have a problem with a person not listening to a certain type of song. What I do take issue with, is someone who is not willing to embrace different types of music before they from their opinion. They necessarily do not have to like the song or artist in question, but at least they can actually say that the artist was given a legitimate chance. I am not too fond of a myriad of musicians, because I either have not heard any material by them, or I simply did not like what I listened to. But you would never see me break out the pitchforks or picket signs if someone else professes their love for that particular artist. So go ahead, and give a listen to that southern or west coast artist. As a matter of fact, take it a step further chill out and listen to some Jazz or R&B. I will not fault you for doing so.

Album Review

Little Brother – GetBack:

With their first commercial release since 2005’s The Minstrel Show, Little Brother attempts to move in a different direction with GetBack. I am a fan of the group’s previous work, so it is feasible for me to have a few reservations concerning the group’s intentions after the split from producer 9th Wonder. Overall the album is a departure from any of their prior material, but Little Brother fans should not be largely disappointed with this release. Truthfully, I would have preferred that “Good Clothes” and “Two Step Blues” were replaced with a couple of 9th Wonder produced songs. I would like to think that he deserves more than one production credit on the album. The upper tier songs include, “Sirens”, “Breakin’ My Heart”, “After The Party” and “That Ain’t Love".

As someone who creates and records music, I realized from the time I started, that music in particular, is like food...And we all know that people have funny taste when it comes to food....If u like a certain type of music, great, if not, don't knock the next mans taste....

Good analogy Terell. Would a food critic only eat mexican food and then have the right to say that chinese is horrible? No. Same with music.

This is true, Terell. But I won't quit trying to get people to at least try the foods I like in hopes they will give up the bullshit they keep eating! lol

I find that most people esp. the younger (middle school-HS) are only exposed to wats on the radio, BET,MTV.... Its hard to get ppl to bite on the music with real lyrical content, cuz it takes time to listen to what the artist is sayin, or its cuz ppl need something to sing-along to in ther cars and know the words 3rd time around. being a current subscriber of sirius and big hip hop fan.... I enjoy the selection between hip hop channels/genres -"hot jamz","back Spin" and "hip hop nation". however -hip hop nation- still plays some "hot jams". I think ther should be a line drawn between "hip-pop", the sing along/club hits, and hip hop. I hate seeing real lyrical artist trying to make sing-along hits (that goes for jayz, nas, royce, talib... etc) . But i guess it all comes down to making money and the lazy listener. Some people dont even know what the fk there singing -"Soulja Boy up in it (OH!)
Watch Me Crank It
Watch Me Roll
Watch Me Crank Dat Soulja Boy,
that Super Man Dat (OH!)
Now Watch Me Do
(Crank Dat Soulja )
Now Watch Me Do
(Crank Dat Soulja )
Now Watch Me Do
(Crank Dat Soulja )
Now Watch Me Do
(Crank Dat Soulja )"
-Com'on now, im a diverse listener, but wtf is he talkin about- one mans garbage is another mans treasure- i guess .... now excuse me while i practice my superman dance....
