![]() In the year 2006, the total album sales for hip-hop and music in general continued its seemingly routine decline in comparison to the previous year's sales. However, after a couple of years in which rap music collectively was not up to par from an artistic standpoint, one could argue that there was a sufficient amount of quality hip-hop in 06. Last year saw LP releases from veterans such as Nas, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, & The Roots, coupled with younger generation artists like The Clipse, Lupe Fiasco (my personal favorite album of last year), T.I. and The Game. The preceding albums along with several others enabled 2006 to artistically be one of the better years for mainstream rap my recent memory. The strong finish to 2006 sparked my interest for future releases in 07. Unfortunately, the year 2007 is halfway over and it is safe to say that it has been an uneventful six months for the mainstream released rap albums thus far. With the exception of a few albums such as Devin the Dude’s Waitin to Inhale and Desire by Pharoahe Monch, there really has not been much rap music to check for. ![]() This year, I have found myself branching out to other musical genres more so than I ever have before. The next six weeks will see several releases that may actually have the ability to satisfy those thirsty fans that are patiently waiting for this drought of quality material to end. ![]() The release of T.I.’s album T.I. vs. T.I.P. sets off the month when it hits the stores on July 3rd, right in time for Independence Day. Fresh off the success of last year which was nothing short of amazing the self proclaimed “King of the South” is back for more, attempting to maintain at a high level both musically and commercially. I’m interested to see how T.I. will pull off this concept album. ![]() High expectations exist for Common, his last album Be is arguably a modern day classic. On July 31st Common is getting back into the swing of things with the album Finding Forever. Many people are curious to see what Kanye and Common will cook up this time around. ![]() The following week on August 7th, UGK is planning to drop Underground Kingz. These rap legends never seem to disappoint when it’s time for them to roll out a new album. This is their first album together in six years and if International Player’s Anthem is any indication, they’re ready to release some heat. ![]() Talib Kweli’s Ear Drum has a scheduled release date of August 14th. A great deal of pressure is on Kweli’s shoulders. His last album was not widely accepted by the fans, publications or the music charts. My guess is that this will definitely be an album that is worth listening to. ![]() Hopefully, for the fans and artist’s sake, these next few weeks do not disappoint. If it does, I may have to start thinking about chalking 2007 up as a loss for hip-hop. We’ll see… Comments
