You may or may not be aware that the rapper Nas, is scheduled to release an album this December controversially titled Nigger. Nas’ decision to select this title has drawn ire from various groups of people. Media outlets, politicians and countless others have voiced their displeasure about the rapper’s decision. I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing with Nas’ choice of an album title. But I do realize that Nas is not setting any precedents by naming his album Nigger. |

Whatever happened to the days when an individual could enjoy a musician, without another person screaming in their ear, about what is or is not real hip-hop? It seems that people are quick to write off a particular artist or song simply because they believe they should do so. Factors such as a person’s geographical location, race and educational background compel some people to feel that they are tied to one particular aspect of music. This definitely should not be! No person should be confined to listening to a specific sub-genre of hip-hop or any genre of music for that matter. I don’t see the harm in a person listening to Jay-Z, zoning out to the likes of Jean Grae or dancing to Foxx’s “Wipe Me Down”. I, for one lack the ability to listen to the same type of music constantly. Truthfully, I need a bit of variety in my life. The frame of mind that I am in on a daily basis changes frequently. I need a certain type of song to accommodate those changes. |

Last week, I happened to read an article written on Washington Post’s website called “Channeling Their Discontent” by Marissa Newhall. The premise behind the piece was that individuals from the Enough Is Enough Campaign traveled to the home of Debra Lee, the CEO of Black Entertainment Television, to basically express their displeasure with the overall manner that African-American individuals are portrayed on music videos and several television shows on B.E.T. The Maryland based group feels that these negative images play an important role in the degeneration of America’s black youth. They plan to travel to Lee’s house every weekend until their issues are acknowledged.

“I’m retiring, I quit… ain’t enough money in this game to keep me around”. (Jay-Z - Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life) In the past couple of months, it has been brought to my attention that two of the younger rappers supposedly have intentions of retiring in the future. The people in question are The Game and Lupe Fiasco. It has been noted in a few interviews that they each plan to release a couple of more albums and promptly take the back exit out of the rap game. I could not help but have a look of sarcasm on my face, when I heard of this news.
