Well, at least that’s what society wants us to believe. When one thinks of black masculinity for the most part a definition that encompasses the above traits is thought of. Thanks to many aspects of hip hop and rap culture anything other than horny, gangsta, and uneducated has become almost unacceptable in the black community. Scholar D. Marvin Jones writes “The athlete, the gangsta rapper and the criminal merge into a single black persona…the predominant image of black masculinity in the U.S. and around the world”. |

“Does hip hop culture affect your spending habits?” I asked her.
“Hip Hop? No, no one tells me what to buy but me.” She responded.
I raised my eyebrow. I was going to start going the whole academia, psychological route…you know, start talking about what we see in videos, artists flashing the hottest trends in our face 24/7, driving the newest cars, latest hairstyles. Then we go out and cop it, unconsciously mimicking what we see on TV. But I didn’t really have the energy. But like I said, I didn’t feel like it that day. So I dropped it.

No seriously, you do. I don’t care what anyone tells me, I am convinced that white people know darn well why they can’t say this word and that they shouldn’t. However, I recently found out that it is a question that they like to ask to stir debate.
I was sitting in my class last week, a class on hip hop culture, minding my own business. It was getting rather dull. I believe the teacher recognized that we just weren’t focused. So, I guess to stir things up, she asked us what we thought of the words nigga and nigger. |
