Well, at least that’s what society wants us to believe. When one thinks of black masculinity for the most part a definition that encompasses the above traits is thought of. Thanks to many aspects of hip hop and rap culture anything other than horny, gangsta, and uneducated has become almost unacceptable in the black community. Scholar D. Marvin Jones writes “The athlete, the gangsta rapper and the criminal merge into a single black persona…the predominant image of black masculinity in the U.S. and around the world”. |

We start going to school, officially, when we are about 5 or 6 years old. At this tender age we are very impressionable. We retain much information as we go about exploring the world around us. Professionals say that the younger a child is, the easier it is to learn another language. Our brains are not clouded with a million other things that we have accumulated over time and we are able to process the foreign quicker and easier (because everything is generally foreign at this age). At this age our learning habits are formed and our ideas about the world are shaped. We start to process what is right and wrong. We also mimic what we see. |

In much recent discussion, debates have surfaced around the topic of indecency in hip-hop culture. From T.I and 50 Cent defending hip-hop (they did a marvelous job too), to Oprah's bias town hall, meeting to Diane Weathers, former editor of essence magazine stating Snoop should lose his job.(yeah right). |

While hip hop has been under much scrutiny lately for its negative aspects, I'd like to focus on much of its positive. Many people, usually non hip hoppers, will say that our music videos are pornographic displays of non talent. However, with a close analysis of hip hop and music videos, one can find many positive lessons we can learn through our videos. I'd like to start with Common's, "Go" video from his 2005 album "BE".
