Louis Vuitton

“Does hip hop culture affect your spending habits?” I asked her.

“Hip Hop? No, no one tells me what to buy but me.” She responded.

I raised my eyebrow. I was going to start going the whole academia, psychological route…you know, start talking about what we see in videos, artists flashing the hottest trends in our face 24/7, driving the newest cars, latest hairstyles. Then we go out and cop it, unconsciously mimicking what we see on TV. But I didn’t really have the energy. Plus, to keep it real sometimes I just be talking about this stuff and don’t even believe it myself. I just like to debate, see what I can get out of people. But like I said, I didn’t feel like it that day. So I dropped it.

“See, I buy things cause’ I like it. I work hard and deserve to treat myself for that right?” She asked me, and I agreed, already seeing where this was going.

“This shirt right here, this is Targets finest ok. $12.99. On sale. These shoes. Payless. Okay. I don’t follow the trends. I don’t give a damn what artists have on or flaunt. If I want something I am going to buy it cause’ it’s cute.”

“Okay”. I agreed. I wondered why I bothered starting this conversation, as I was really trying to leave and get on my way home.

“I am 35 years old” (Wow. Didn’t know this one, she looked and dressed like a 21-year-old). “I am a single mother. My daughter is 16 okay. I work hard. Go to school. Pay my own bills. Pay my own rent. I buy what I want to buy not cause’ an artist tells me to.”

Okay now she seemed like she wanted validation for something. I get it, I get it. You buy what you want to buy…

“I bought myself a $2200 Louis Vuitton bag because I wanted it. I can do that. I thought it was cute and I bought it.”

“What bag is it?” I was curious to know what a $2200 bag looked like.

“You know that Kanye video…”

I smiled. Of course I do. $2200 for a bag. I began to think…well, I am a single graduate student right now. No kids. I have a job but it’s not that great. $2200 is just over double my rent. Sure, I believe in treating myself for working hard…but this usually comes in the form of a pedicure or maybe a bottle of wine…but to spend 2 months rent on a bag? I imagined her situation…single mother in her 30's, renting not owning…maybe it's me…but ummm, it seems like that $2200 could have went other places…

She was still going on about the Kanye video. I asked her…

“Does hip hop culture affect your spending habits?”

She stopped talking and sighed.

Of course it affects my spending habits but I wouldn't be quick to point the finger at hip hip in causing another unattractive trait in our community. While peopl used to run out of stores with ADIDAS because of Run DMC, hip hop has been influencing our pockets. But athletes influence the kids even more since its all about the shoes with them-- or at least it was when I was growing up.

Even if hip hop werent around, the next predominant culture would influence how we spend our money. Keep in ming LV ain't just hip hop. We always tend to want what the folks at top have.

You know, I had a very similar conversation this morning. But we had conceded as a premise that pop culture does affect our spending habits and the only question remaining was, "To what extent does pop culture affect our spending habits, and is it only generational?" We then discussed the extent to which consumerism and the almighty rise of the luxury industry has trickled down to children and actual adults. For example, I read an article a while back about how after little Suri Cruise was captured in her darling Burberry dress, the dress immediately sold out of stores. I think your question, and mine, is answered by the fact that very few prominent celebrities actually have to buy their clothes -- designers constantly send them clothes, bags, and jewelry in the hopes that if they appear in it, it will affect their bottom line. I think, and this is true of hip hop as well, that sometimes buying a $2,200 bag, if only for a moment, makes one feel like they are living that lifestyle associated with that article and the celebrity seen with it. Your story reminds me of a shopping trip I had over the summer in Chicago. My boyfriend loves shoes and was trying to convince me to get a particular pair of very fierce YSL shoes. I was unsure whether it would be justified to pay that much for shoes I may only wear once or twice -- they were fierce but trendy. The saleswoman overhears our disussion and comes over with the usual compliments after I have the shoes on my feet. When that form of persuasion appears to be unsuccessful, she then tells me that Beyonce had worn these shoes and that Ciara had worn them in her latest video. Her sales tactic made me giggle. But by the look of seriousness in her eyes, I knew it had worked on at least one customer before me...

Lest you think my comment suggests that I am above the fray, I've purchased more than my fair share of dresses and shoes after I've seen them on a celebrity. If I could be convinced that I wasn't too thick to pull of a Herve Leger dress, I'd get one after loving the look of the dress on Victoria Beckham and Rihanna. I am convinced that celebrities wearing designer items is the most successful marketing tool out there. But I also find my shopping habits sometimes influenced by Jackie Kennedy's style circa 1970s. If you could help me explain that, well it'd be wonderful!
