Birthed out of Atlanta’s HBCU consortium, a team of young visionaries known as “Great 8 Productions”, are gearing up to make a lasting imprint on the fields of graphic media, audio/visual media, and apparel design. This band-of-brothers turned business partners are set on taking black entrepreneurship to new heights by allowing group creativity to flow freely and fluidly throughout all facets of design and production. By preserving their bond and staying at the forefront of urban style, urban culture, and technology, Great 8 Productions—and its subsidiaries, Gr8 Media, Urban Takeout, and iStep—plans to surpass the golden standard and to inspire other young Black people to be entrepreneurs.
Imperious: What is Great 8 Productions?
Great 8: Great 8 Productions is a creative media company based in Atlanta with operating branches in Boston, New York City, and Chicago. We have the capabilities to take a media project from start to finish by performing and integrating a myriad of artistic services ranging from graphic design & videography to custom apparel & branding solutions. Under the umbrella of Great 8 Productions, we have grown to incorporate three divisions: Gr8 Media (graphic design, web design, logo design, etc.), Urban Takeout (custom couture, exclusive greek paraphernalia, etc.), and iStep (Stepshow DVDs, DVD authoring, and interactive community for step-fanatics).
Imperious: When and how was Great 8 started?
Great 8: Well, it all started freshman year at Morehouse College. All of us lived in the same freshman dorm; many of us are roommate pairs (go figure). Throughout the year, we became aware of each other’s tremendous abilities and unique talents. After successfully authoring and selling our first Stepshow DVD in 2004, we decided to try it again the next year…and again …and again. From that collection of comprehensive DVDs, we decided to take the next step by testing the waters in e-commerce, establishing Great8Productions.com (version 1).
Imperious: What was the motivation?
Great 8: As a group of brothers, we felt that one of the best ways to strengthen our bond was to band together and create. We always had a knack for working on productions whether they were stepshows, pageant performances, or poetry showcases, etc. Working so closely with great friends generates a summation effect; our combined creativity renders grand products, consistently.
Imperious: What are the backgrounds of the members?
Great 8: We’re a Crayola assortment of personalities and strengths. We have guys who are visual artists; they are excellent at understanding color, space usage, and placement/arrangement. We also have guys who are computer engineers; they understand much of the technical components and stay up on the latest software needed. We have guys who are PR specialists, mavens, and trendsetters. But the most interesting thing is that we share similar characteristics; we aren’t confined to one particular category, we have developed skills in multiple arenas such that maximum creativity can be reached with each product.
Imperious: What makes Great 8 Productions unique?
Great 8: Our company is unique because the individuals who compose it make a daily effort to not only siphon their creativity into their work, but to also raise the bar with each project that is taken on. This began through passion, and the desire to put our forces to something that was positive, enjoyable and artistic. We love what we do; it is meticulous but it is fun – and we definitely take having fun seriously. This results in what we believe to be some of the most unique projects in the market. Imperious: What is the overall vision of the corporation?
Great 8: Our overall vision for the company is to be the front runner in all of our endeavors. We want to show people that faith and hard work can render awesome results. This company strives to achieve longevity, superior quality, and set standards for all businesses and artists alike. As we continue to grow as people and as a company, our vision too will grow, flourish, and manifest.
Imperious: How does it serve the general public?
Great 8: We serve the general public by serving as paradigms for entrepreneurs. We want to reflect integrity, individuality, and reciprocity. We put our best into every venture and project, hoping to influence others that putting your best foot forward would create a prominent path for any and all progeny to follow. Because we all have different backgrounds, we are able to reach a broad base of consumers and locations, which means that we are able to share our endeavors with many. All of these things help us to give back to the environment and people who pushed us along the way.
Imperious: Do you guys see Great 8 Productions being a staple of modern urban culture?
Great 8: Well, yes. However, we see Great 8 serving as a staple in not only urban culture, but in many cultures and genres, because we believe that creativity, quality, and sincerity are universal. Ultimately, we see our company appealing to several types of tastes and interests. We all see things in multiple perspectives, so our synergy creates products with a panoramic feel and they cater to different spectrums.
Imperious: What role do you see Great 8 Productions playing in developing the outlook of young black male entrepreneurs?
Great 8: We just want black entrepreneurs, despite age, to be inspired to do something different…and to do it well. So many different businesses don’t put themselves in the consumers view. These days, media and apparel products that people purchase are uniform and boring because that’s all that’s made available to them. But we want to show you that putting effort and imagination into their work is what’s needed.
Imperious: What’s next for Great 8?
Great 8: Well, we’re preparing to launch three fall lines of Black Greek-inspired Couture under our Urban Takout Apparel division. So keep your eyes peeled for some crazy styles, with subtle hints of frat/sorority tradition.
Also, the official Launch of iStep is slated for mid-August. Prepare yourselves for the ultimate step community, complete with Stepmaster Commentary and special “Who Run It” Compilation DVDs (it’s gonna be like an And 1 Mixtape, but for Steppin’)
Gr8 Media is exploding right now. We just plan to continue to keep producing high quality for small business endeavors. We also plan to work with several political candidates designing their promotional materials.
"Great 8 did the logo for the website ImperiousEnt.com. They also have done promotional materials and business cards for me. Excellent product and excellent service. Holla at me for the connect." -Almuhtada Smith
