You learn from an early age to respect and honor the bald eagle. Beginning in kindergarten, a youngster is taught to protect and preserve the eagle for it is a symbol of our rich American heritage…and the violin plays on. The brown bodied bird with white head and white tail with the contrasting yellow feet is easy to recognize and hard to forget. Bald eagles are very intelligent species and tend to position their nests very high in old trees to detour predators, but yet close to water so that hunting and the securing of food is not an arduous task.

I tell you this not to bore you with a brief science lesson but to set the stage for you to take flight and achieve greatness. The bald eagle, like man, is very unique, highly endangered, and was given the ability to spread wings and rise above…It is up to the individual whether or not those wings will be exercised and its ability to fly will be recognized. The interesting part about the bald eagle realizing its potential is that he is set up to fail. The parenting eagles usually build a nest ranging anywhere from 5 to 9 feet in diameter and can weigh as much as 2 tons to raise their young chicks in. Sounds cozy and comfortable, even for a bird, but it is the make up of the nest that makes it so distinctive.
Although the nest is wide and spacious, it is built on a bed of thorns and then coated with feathers and other materials that make for a very welcoming first home for the newly hatched chicks. This comfort is soon to be short lived. As the chick begins to grow and put on weight, the feathers and other materials that once coated the inside of the nest begins to fall off and fade away thus exposing the thorns that the nest is built on. Hmmmmm…..Where does this leave this precious little chick that as of now has lived an effortless life? It knows that continuing to sit in the nest and flapping its growing wings will only lead to pain. So where should an eagle who is experiencing pain in his nest go? He MUST learn to fly.
We as people live much the same life. We are put in positions for a specific period of time so that we grow and gain the skills needed to propel us to that next level. Very much similar to the bald eagle, we begin in an area of comfort and as we grow and prepare our wings for flight we are painfully reminded that this is only a stop on our progression to greatness. As soon as we become complacent in our thinking and in our actions we begin to expose the thorns that are used to push us out of that comfort zone and to the edge of the nest to make that step towards taking flight. The bald eagle would not be the image of strength and power if a bird that size, with that incredible wingspan and flight potential were to lie dormant in a nest where his incredible gift would never be seen.
We are presented with decisions everyday that challenge us to either make our way to the edge of the nest, ready to take that leap of faith or to cower back and continue to sit on our bed of thorns and never understand the true potential of our gift. Can you imagine a bald eagle that doesn’t seem to be painted against the blue sky while in flight? Or a bald eagle who does not majestically sit as the seal of a nation? In much the same light, we are shaming our Creator if we choose not to rise from the thorns and give our gifts flight. An eagle is known for its size, strength, and power. Shouldn’t you be as well?
“A believer is a bird in a cage, a freethinker is an eagle parting the clouds with tireless wings” ~ Robert Green Ingersoll
We serve one of two authors everyday...the author of faith, boldness, and love or the author of fear, doubt, and hate. To serve both is to be double minded which would make one unstable in ALL of his ways. Chose to serve the author of faith, boldness, and love each day and stepping out of that comfort zone inorder to achieve GREATNESS won't be a problem. Good job Rob!
Wow. That's deep. Now only if there was something in the hood that was similar to the next and its thorns-- you know, something that says live in pain or FLY. Maybe there is and people have just learned to tolerate the pain and gave up on flying or attempting to fly.
