Salt-n-Pepa throwback You already know what the business is, unnecessary commissary, boy we live this shit. Jay-Z had figures like RUN DMC, KRS-One, and Sugarhill Gang to look up to. Today, potential young male rappers have young artists such, as Lil’ Wayne and Young Joc to follow. But my question is where the hell are all the female rappers??????? I mean, Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown was once every street girl’s dream to the road to riches. Even before the days of the Ill Na Na and Queen Bee, there was Queen Latifah and Mc Lyte. However, today there is no female rapper in the game that’s dropping consistent hot tracks. Do not get me wrong, Remy is nasty with mic, but we haven’t heard a hot single from her in a while. Yes, she does have mixtapes, but we must all agree not all mixtapes are heard globally or publicize, like an album. I guess what I am trying to figure out is what is going on with females and record deals. It’s starting to seem like hip-hop is going backwards. When hip-hop first hit the streets, it was hard for females to get into the rap game. Females like Salt n Pepa had to redundantly prove themselves in the booth before they received the proper respect. It was the 80’s and early 90’s female rappers, Mc Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Salt n Pepa, that paved the way for Foxy and Kim just as Public Enemy did for B.I.G and present day male rappers. But what now? There are no female rappers holding it down or paving the way for potential female rappers. We haven’t heard from Lil’ Kim since she went to jail. Foxy is behind Bars. Eve went into an acting career. Oh no doubt, Remy has the mixtape game on lock, but why are record labels procrastinating on giving her a deal? I respect the rap game, but we need to get more female rappers back out. Personally, I will love to see a single drop featuring Eve and Remy. We desperately need our hottest female rappers to come out and make an impact on the rap game. If Lip Gloss is the future of female hip-hop, then someone might as well just throw in the towel and sign MTV’s Celebrity Rap Super Stars Kendra, the play girl, and Shar Jackson. If I can take it upon myself to remix Weezy’s My Daddy verse, Females MCs… Feed Me, Feed me…NO Homo! Comments

Check out the Kanary Diamonds chick. She's dope. I'm ashamed of what Foxy and Remy have become. You should be ashamed as well. I like Jean Grae too. The chick from Crime Mob is dope too. Her flow is sick. Way better then the dudes in the group! You have to dig deep to find a tight female emcee and labels only want to invest in a Lil Kim type for the most part. Missy is still tight too. The lane is wide open for a new female artist to blow. Time will tell.
I agree that the presence of female MCs are missing from the hip-hop community. Yet, there hasn’t been a rapper like Mc Lyte since Mc Lyte. The likes of Lil Kim and Foxy Brown made female rappers a gimmick, and in some regards a joke, as they were made to be merely sex symbols spiting someone else’s material. Foxy Brown had a nice flow but she didn’t make music that would affect or influence a generation towards prosperity or anything positive. They became more eye candy than rappers. The same with the likes of Trina and Khia [My Neck, My Back (Lick it)] have distorted the image of what it means to be a female MC in my opinion. And I believe this is the reason that Remy hasn’t been picked up as a major artist with a two or three platinum albums under her belt already because even though she is attractive she isn’t that sex symbol that the industries want per se, as her flow is too raw for that.
Furthermore, the industry itself has changed overall and it’s not about the message or even content anymore but how much can you NOT say on a record and still flow over this million-dollar beat that will sell the record company a million ring-tones. The MC isn’t being appreciated by the companies or the people for that matter. Men like Shawn Carter and Nasir Jones are the last of dying breed; men that possess honor and character in their respective lives and careers. Yet, these men are being unappreciated by a good portion of our newer generation of hip-hop fans. For me, it’s an insult to have a 14 year old tell me that Lil Wayne is better than a Jay-z or a Rakim; it’s just ridiculous.
@Sincere: It is not ridiculous for a 14 year old to think Lil Wayne is better then Jay-Z or Rakim. Lil Wayne is better then them in 2007! Compare it to the NBA. Jordan is the greatest of all time (Jay-Z). But if he came back to the NBA, would he be better then Lebron or Kobe? No. What we need to encourage these kids to do is "know their history". Including the history of hip-hop that shows Jay, Nas, Big, Pac, Pun, Rakim, KRS-One, Slick Rick, Kane, LL, etc. as the greatest rappers to do it. With regard to female rappers, again there are some doing it. I blame the labels for only wanting a Lil Kim type. A major wouldn't invest in a MC Lyte image. Not lucrative enough in 2007. But stop hating on the 14 year olds and try to understand them.
I forgot to mention Ice Cube and Outkast. My bad Cube.
Ummm personally, I'd rather have no female rappers out if they are all going to look like lil kim and foxy. Of course I used to listen to both of them but I am soooo ready for something different. You can be sexy, classy, and demand respect at the same time. And ol' girl from crime mob, yeah she has a better flow than the dudes, but come one....."I got 32 flavors of this bootyliscous bubble gum, rasberry, grape, cherry, come and get this honey bun!" Get out of town on a fast train....

Though the comment about 'lip gloss' seems offhand, I want to ask why this isn't a valid form of hip-hop. I would prefer for her - as a child - to rap about the things she knows in childhood or prepubescent adolescence rather than try to be as raw as some of the other MCs you're talking.
