I’ve come to the realization I officially know nothing about the NFL. I used to feel confident to discuss it with friends. I would take my positions, feel confident and often get supported with the results of a week, season, or unanticipated playoff run. Unfortunately, this NFL season has changed all that.

Who the hell would have predicted that the AFC South would be the toughest conference in football? Wasn’t Peyton’s team supposed to suffer from the loss of key defensive players? Weren’t Vince Young’s (and Kerry Collins’?!?) Titans supposed to suffer without Pacman? And how did Haynesworth shed his vilification to become one of this season's breakout stars? Matt Schaub’s unproven background made him a risky bet, but he’s shown promise in some surprising wins this season. Finally, Jack Del Rio was vindicated with choosing David Garrard through the Jags 4-2 start even after the clubhouse shocking of losing a well respected leader in Leftwich. And that is all within one conference.

I could keep writing about everything else that’s come as a surprise to me with this season but that would fill a tome so instead I’ll stick to what I know:

1. The Patriots pulled off the most lopsided trade in NFL history this offseason. Randy Moss for a 4th Round pick!!! And the Chargers just got Chris Chambers for a 2nd round pick and some are calling that a steal. How can this be possible? A fourth rounder is what you throw in to sweeten the deal, or take a chance on an unproven commodity, not a known star. Sure Moss was a cancer in Oakland, but this was a guy who was simply unbelievable at times in Minnesota, and you had to know he still had some of that left in him. The guy has 10 TDs and 732 yards through 7 games this season. If Brady wasn’t playing out of his mind, I’d say he should be a strong contender for the MVP at this point. Did you see the two bombs that Brady just left for Randy to go up and get against the Dolphins? There is no way to really cover him at this point. And that cost rings up between the 100-110th selection in this draft? Ridiculous.

2. Tom Brady is a better QB than Peyton Manning. Manning may be more accurate, he may be a better offensive coordinator (because that’s really what he’s doing before the snap), but Brady is the better QB. Manning still gets frustrated with a strong pass rush, while Brady can stand in there strong, take a hit, and get the ball out to his receiver. Brady’s numbers in the past were limited by his receivers, and now with some respectable target’s he’s sending a big F*** YOU to anyone who would take Peyton first. Mind you, I hate the man and I’m saying this. It’s to the point that I pray a defensive lineman will invert his knee with a helmet on a diving sack attempt to protect the legacy of Joe Montana as the best QB ever, and writing this makes me throw up in my mouth a little, but he is simply the top QB in the game.

3. Norv Turner can’t coach. I don’t care how the Charger’s have turned it around a bit over the past couple weeks. The man is an idiot. Even I can figure out if you give the ball to LT you win games, but the man makes one of the greatest stores of offensive talent look inept and I wouldn’t pick him to out-play a dinner roll in a game of chess. How can he be a head coach in this league?

4. The NFC West is the worst division in football. This pains me as much as praising Tom Brady because I’m a huge Niners fan, but there is not a single team that you would pick against anyone but a Non-Pats AFC East team, and I still think the Rams would lose to them. If they weren’t required to play inter-conference games, they would lose 14 games, and the 2 wins would only be the result of other teams looking a week ahead. None of the four have an offensive line, only 2 have halfway respectable quarterbacks, they all have overrated running backs (Frank Gore and Stephen Jackson were seen as top 5 fantasy picks before the season, now look at them). The Niners and the Cardinals might have halfway decent defenses if their offenses didn’t leave them on the field 40 minutes a game, but otherwise there isn’t anything worth discussing about the division.

5. Defense does not win championships anymore. I know the old adage. I know no one agrees with me on this even. But here’s the blueprint for success: build a decent defense and then an offense that will put up 30 points a game or more. You’ll have a way better shot at taking the title than focusing purely on your defense. With the Colts, Pats, Chargers, and Cowboys you’re going to find people who will be able to score enough that your offense will have to be more than average. You won’t see a team like the Ravens’ Championship squad win right now because they would get overmatched by the offensive firepower around the league. Maybe it’s because the best athletes are playing on offense now days, or maybe it’s because offenses are so dynamic that you can’t find a way to defend them for 60 minutes, I’m not sure. All I know is that 9 times out of 10, a team like last year’s Colts will take out a team like last year’s Bears in today’s NFL.

Sadly, I think that’s all that I know about the NFL anymore. I think that’s why I haven’t been writing as much recently. I was excited for the start of football, now I just spend my time scratching my head. If someone knows what’s going on, than you’re definitely a better man than I, and please help me make sense of the mess that is the National Football League.

I think the Brady better then Manning argument is a bit premature. But we shall see when they go head to head this week!! It's cheating to have Brady on your fantasy football team at this point!

Brady is no where near as good Manning. He is incredibly cool under pressure but you are under estimating how powerful of a tool Randy Moss is. Lets review his history, his Rookie year he made Randal Cunningham the highest rated QB in the league (Randal was in his last season). Daunte Culpepper was the highest rated passer over the next 5 years only rivaled by Peyton Manning and the year Peyton won the MVP Culpepper threw for more yards and completed a higher percentage of passe (sound familiar). Moss has been injured for the last three years and people forgot how much of a threat he is but even in his injured years he put up a 10 td year and an 1000yd season, he is the greatest wr and the best weapon any qb has ever had. He gets other wr open and he makes it impossible to put eight in the box and to ever have an effective pass rush. Moss is what makes Brady great not the other way around

Defense does still win championships. Did you forget the Colts didnt start winning till their defense could stop the run. They lost to Pittburg and the Pats who had built their reputations on the most difficult blitz schemes in football, 4 years they beat a team that was considered the best offensive team in the NFL. Further if the Pats do end up winning its not because defense doesn't win anymore its because there is no defensive equvilent to their team (which is the only team in recent history that people said could go 16-0 before the season even started.) As for Indy they are rated number one in pass defense and top ten in every other defensive catergory except TO. Defense is like starting pitching in Baseball it gets overlooked till the playoffs come around and you realize a good defense can stop anybody. (But the Pats may be to powerful for any current defenive squad Moss, stallworth, and welker dont know if any defense in histroy could compete with this talent)

Cunningham, i dont even know where to start with you. Moss makes Brady great? Oh yeah, because Moss was around for the three Superbowl championships that Tom Brady won with the Patriots...oh wait, he wasn't. In fact, Brady had very little to work with talent-wise during those championship years at the WR/TE positions. Daniel Graham was great as a Pat...what is that guy doing now?? A whole lot of nothing... Even assuming your argument is logical about Moss making Brady (it's not), why can't you say the same about Marvin Harrison "making" Peyton Manning? Peyton hasn't won shit without him.

Brady is hands down the better QB. He's got more superbowls and he won them with less talent to work with. Give Brady a Marvin Harrison (which he finally has this year) and look what happens!!

Your lack of Football knowledge disturbs me "Brady is Better", In Brady's career he has never thrown 30 tds, he has thrown 4000 yds once, and he has never had QB rating of 100. Listen the pats were a good team and they won those superbowls because of a great smash mouth defense combined with a QB who didnt make mistakes, mostly cause he doesnt take chances and not cause he is unbelievably accurate. ( he has never competed 65% of his passes unlike Culpepper, Cunningham, oh.. and Manning). Listen Terry Bradshaw has 4 rings and Troy Aikmen has 3, niether of them are better then Manning or Marino. Superbowls are the measure of a leader and should be put in the calculus of how great you are but remeber Football is a team sport and great teams win Superbowls. Robert Horry has 6 rings is he better then Charles Barkley? All this to say, Brady has already thrown more tds then he has in any previous season and it is only halfway thru, but this is a typical season for Moss. What does that mean?

One more thing comparing Moss and Harrison is like comparing bill russell and wilt chamberlian one is fan favorite who wins all the time on a great team who everybody respects, and the other is a villian who everbody hates but everybody knows is the most unstoppable force once the game starts. What happened when Chamberlain got on a good team? They won 69 games and Jerry West who was already great won his first championship.
