While as a black man I am proud that a black written, directed, and black fully cast movie is the number one movie in America, as a movie fan I am shocked at how bad the movie actually was. As a film the movie was at its best decent, the acting was mediocre, the writing was average, and the dialogue was atrocious. One thing the movie did have was comedy, and Tyler Perry has made his career off making us laugh while dealing with serious issues. I applaud his attempt at social commentary, but I am lost in its awful delivery. Many of the messages in the movie are contrite and cliché. When you combine these messages with the ridiculous dialogue and unbelievable characters, you have the makings of a really bad movie. |

When I went to see Stardust I thought I would be seeing the next “Princess Bride” or at the very least a high priced “NeverEnding Story” but instead I saw a movie that concentrated more on its occasional humor and less concerned with telling a good or exciting story. I didn’t know if the movie was a love story or an adventure because it sucked as either, but one thing I was sure of was why it got a PG-13 rating. Within the first 15 minutes of the film a star gazing kind dashes off to this mystical land and has sex with a woman within seconds of meeting her. |

For a while now Chuck D. of Public Enemy has argued that Hollywood owes African Americans reparations for the negative images and stereotypes it has promoted. I don’t know if we will every get reparations for this, but I do know that negative images of blacks in the media still exist. In movies negative images seem less overt than in the news, or sports (Fighting dogs in a house Michael Vick owns =24/7 coverage; A women gets raped in a house Patrick Kerney owns =2 minutes of coverage), but there are strong cases that these images are still prevalent in movies. |

How many times have we gone to the movies elated to finally see our favorite superhero on the big screen, but by the end of the movie the only thing that resembles the hero you remember is the name? For me and most fans of the superhuman, far too many times. I am as much a fan of film as I am of Marvel and DC and I understand that some storylines must be sacrificed for betterment of the film and its budget. What I do not understand are changes that do not improve the movie and take away from the meaningfulness of the character and sacrifice the theme of the story. |
