IMPERIOUS INTERVIEW

Imperious: Who are your musical influences past and present?

Brená: SWV, 702, Amil Lareux, Teedra Moses, Mariah Carey, Stephanie Mills, Anita Baker, Tina  Marie, Van Hunt, Bilal. There are so many artists that have influenced  me.

Imperious: How long have you been singing?

Brená: Ive been singing since age 9, I started singing in the choir. But I’ve been singing professionally for about two years.

Imperious: Alexander Hamilton High School has a reputation for producing famous people. Who did you go to school with?

Brená: Yes, I went to Alexander Hamilton High School, a performing arts school in Los Angeles with people like Kyla Pratt, Omarion from B2k and singer Houston. A lot of song writers also went there.

Imperious: How would you describe your music?

Brená: It’s Pop and R&B with a soothing feel to it. You can tell on some of my notes that I’m influenced by jazz artists but it still has a pop/commercial sound to it.

Imperious: Do you write your own material?

Brená: Yes I do, if not I definitely co-write.

Imperious: How do you feel about the current state of hip-hop and the music industry in general?

Brená: I feel that it’s dead or dying. I remember people such as Mary J, Method Man, Biggie, and 2Pac talking about what they were going through. I believed them and believed in how they saw life. But now artists are getting paid, calling women bitches and ho’s and talking about dope. A lot of artists, when they get paid, are not used to seeing that many zeros behind a number and will say anything to provide for their family. So they say things that they may not even know anything about. After so many times it’s unbelievable to me….you have checks and money now, why go backwards when you can go forward.  We’re misleading the youth and its not interesting anymore.

Imperious: So, what’s next for Brená Robinson?

Brená: My main focus is to work with people that believe in me and are very supportive about what I want to do. I’m very focused.  I want to write about what I know or get people who can help me write about what I know.  I want to stay true to myself throughout this whole process. I don’t want to sell out just for a check. You wont hear me saying, “I’m the flyest bitch!” or something like that because that’s not me. I want to stay Brená. I want everyone I know to say, “yeah, that’s her.”  I want to work with writers and producers that help me make great timeless music.  Something I can listen to and be proud of.  I don’t want to get lost.
