“How much is music worth?”
It is painfully clear that the traditional $15 charged for a packaged CD is too much. CD sales declined another 14% in 2007, on top of years of similar decline. Big box retailers like Wal-mart, which account for two-thirds of record sales, already demand cheaper CDs to use as loss leaders to get people into their stores. Increasingly, they are turning to DVDs and video games, with a corresponding loss of shelf space for CDs. With specialty chains like Tower Records going out of business in ‘07, the local Wal-mart is often the only place to buy a CD, so a cutback on big box retailers’ commitment to stocking CDs would be like a torpedo to the bow of the Titanic.
