No seriously, you do. I don’t care what anyone tells me, I am convinced that white people know darn well why they can’t say this word and that they shouldn’t. However, I recently found out that it is a question that they like to ask to stir debate. I was sitting in my class last week, a class on hip hop culture, minding my own business. It was getting rather dull. I believe the teacher recognized that we just weren’t focused. So, I guess to stir things up, she asked us what we thought of the words nigga and nigger. Whatever happened to the days when an individual could enjoy a musician, without another person screaming in their ear, about what is or is not real hip-hop? It seems that people are quick to write off a particular artist or song simply because they believe they should do so. Factors such as a person’s geographical location, race and educational background compel some people to feel that they are tied to one particular aspect of music. This definitely should not be! No person should be confined to listening to a specific sub-genre of hip-hop or any genre of music for that matter. I don’t see the harm in a person listening to Jay-Z, zoning out to the likes of Jean Grae or dancing to Foxx’s “Wipe Me Down”. I, for one lack the ability to listen to the same type of music constantly. Truthfully, I need a bit of variety in my life. The frame of mind that I am in on a daily basis changes frequently.
