LAS VEGAS, Aug. 30 -- A federal investigation is ongoing, and an internal review has begun, but NBA Commissioner David Stern is not waiting for the results to defend the integrity of his league’s referees.

It has been two weeks since the former NBA referee Tim Donaghy pleaded guilty to providing inside information to gamblers, and more than a month since Stern dismissed Donaghy as a ``rogue, isolated criminal.” Since then, there have been reports -- all based on anonymous sources -- that Donaghy would name other referees who might have broken NBA rules, if not necessarily the law, by gambling. While not dismissing that possibility, Stern -- in his first extended comments in more than a month -- expressed confidence Thursday that his 60-person officiating crew would withstand the scrutiny.

President Bush and the three top Democrats that want to replace him couldn’t get to New Orleans fast enough this week. The occasion, of course, was the second anniversary of the Katrina debacle.

Predictably, Bush -- as he’s done in his 12 previous treks to the Gulf since Katrina -- publicly boasted that he’s done everything humanly possible to get the region back on its feet. He also insisted that much more still must be done and his administration will do it. Just as predictably, his would-be replacements Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards just as publicly lambasted Bush’s efforts as hopelessly failed and flawed.  And they insisted that there’s no reason to believe that he’ll improve on the anemic effort.

Exactly five days before three black college students were killed and one wounded in Newark, N.J., Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas spoke to five black journalists on the topic of illegal immigration and immigration reform.

Predictably, she tried to link Latino immigrants in the United States illegally with black Americans, their supposed allies “of color.”
